In this article, we'll discuss how AI chatbots help inform patients about their cancer risk. A study showed that the technology can potentially transform hereditary cancer risk assessment and preventative healthcare. In healthcare, technology has continuously advanced to help improve patient care. One notable development is the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare systems, including the use of chatbots. These digital health tools can potentially transform how patients receive and interact with healthcare services.

A 2021 study examined the implementation of a chatbot designed to automate hereditary cancer risk assessment, focusing on women's health. The findings highlight the potential of AI chatbots to identify high-risk patients, provide educational information, and facilitate preventative genetic testing.

Genetic testing: The potential to reduce the risk of hereditary cancer

Specific genetic variants increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer, and people with these variants may benefit from proactive measures, such as increased screening, preventive surgeries, or targeted therapies.¹–4 Genetic testing plays a critical role in identifying these hereditary cancer variants and in making informed decisions regarding healthcare management.

Despite availability and advances in genetics, testing rates remain disappointingly low. 5

One of the main challenges is the need for greater awareness and understanding of genetic testing. Many people may not be aware of the existence or importance of genetic testing for assessing their risk of hereditary cancer.

Furthermore, disparities in access and awareness can challenge the management of hereditary cancer risks. Underrepresented populations may face limited access to healthcare services, language barriers, and socioeconomic factors, contributing to unequal outcomes.

By addressing these challenges, we can help make genetic testing a routine part of healthcare. This will enable timely interventions and personalized care for all individuals at risk. hereditary cancers.

AI Chatbot Invitae Gia®: Shaping healthcare and redefining the possibilities in genetic testing

AI has sparked discussions about the role of automation and its potential impact on healthcare. Some skeptics argue that the rise of AI technologies removes the human element from the equation. But AI has the potential to reshape healthcare by transforming the patient experience.

Natural language processing allows chatbots and virtual assistants to interact with patients, providing personalized support and improving patient satisfaction. They can offer 24/7 assistance, answer medical questions, and help schedule appointments.

Ultimately, this improves patient engagement and reduces the administrative burden on healthcare professionals. Individuals who need greater access to genetic counselors or specialized healthcare centers can still receive accurate and reliable information about their genetic health.

AI chatbots have the potential to address the linguistic and cultural barriers that can hinder effective communication between patients and healthcare professionals. They can be programmed to understand and respond in multiple languages, enabling people from diverse backgrounds to engage in meaningful conversations about genetic testing without language limitations.

Furthermore, chatbots can be designed to be culturally sensitive, taking into account different cultural beliefs and values related to genetic testing, fostering trust and inclusion in healthcare interactions.

By leveraging AI chatbots in genetic testing, healthcare providers can expand their reach, ensuring that more individuals, regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic background, can access valuable genetic insights. AI chatbots have the potential to democratize healthcare and reduce disparities, ultimately supporting more equitable outcomes for patients.

By providing accessible and personalized support, chatbots can help people navigate the genetic testing process, understand their results, and actively participate in their healthcare decisions.

The study and its findings

The researchers retrospectively observed patients who used a patient engagement assistant (web-based chatbot), Gia®, to assess their risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer, Lynch syndrome, and adenomatous polyposis syndromes. The study evaluated user engagement, completion rates, and the chatbot's effectiveness in identifying high-risk individuals.

The results revealed three key findings: (7)

1.High user engagement

Of the 95,166 patients invited to use the chatbot, 61,070 (64.2%) engaged with it. This high engagement rate demonstrates the acceptability and interest among patients in using AI-powered tools. The study showed that, among those who participated in the chat, the proportion of patients who completed the chat was high across all racial and ethnic groups, ranging from 64.7% to 77%.

This further demonstrates the need for more equitable access to cancer risk assessments.

2. Completion and Acceptability

The majority of users who interacted with the chatbot completed the cancer risk assessment (89.4%) and the genetic testing education section (71.4%). Patients not only interacted with the chatbot, but also found the interaction satisfactory. On a scale of one to five, where five was the highest satisfaction score, the average score among 39,215 respondents was 4.6.

3. Risk identification and genetic testing

Many patients screened with the chatbot (27,2%) met the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN®) criteria for genetic testing. Among those screened, 5,6% had disease-causing (pathogenic) variants, highlighting the chatbot's effectiveness in identifying high-risk patients who would benefit from further genetic testing.

Furthermore, 19.1% of % users reported a personal history of cancer, and 66.7% reported a family history. Of these users combined, 6.6% had disease-causing variants, further emphasizing the importance of identifying high-risk individuals to inform treatment, screening, and other clinical management.

The study's findings underscore the critical need for equitable and widely available cancer risk assessments, such as AI chatbots. By harnessing the power of AI technology, healthcare systems can ensure that everyone has equal access to preventative measures and genetic testing. AI chatbots facilitate informed decision-making for patients.

Digital health technology: Addressing accessibility and efficiency

Digital health technologies, such as AI chatbots, have emerged as powerful tools to bridge the gap in hereditary cancer risk assessment and genetic testing. By integrating AI into healthcare systems, chatbots can automate the process of collecting and analyzing patient data, provide personalized risk assessments, and offer educational resources.

Integrating AI chatbots into healthcare systems can bring several advantages and address critical problems.

Greater efficiency

Traditional methods for collecting personal and family medical history for cancer risk assessment are time-consuming and underutilized. The study highlighted the need for scalable, integrated solutions to help healthcare professionals identify at-risk patients. AI chatbots streamline the process, enabling efficient risk assessment before routine care appointments.

Better access and equity

The study highlighted disparities in discussions about genetic testing, as healthcare providers are less likely to engage in these conversations with historically underrepresented groups. AI chatbots have the potential to provide widely available cancer risk assessments, supporting equitable access to preventive measures and working to reduce disparities in cancer screening and outcomes.

Informing patients

By engaging patients in conversations about their risk of hereditary cancer, AI chatbots empower people to actively participate in their healthcare journeys. Patients receive personalized information and education, enabling them to make more informed decisions about their health.

Integrating AI chatbots into healthcare systems not only improves accessibility and efficiency, but also has the potential to enhance how we approach hereditary cancer risk assessment and genetic testing.

Leverage the Invitae AI chatbot, Gia, to improve patient care

As the power of automated technology continues to grow and develop, the healthcare landscape will continue to change and expand. By integrating AI chatbots, healthcare providers can offer more comprehensive patient care and address challenges related to accessibility and equitable cancer risk assessments.

The study illustrated patients' willingness to adopt AI chatbots as part of their healthcare experience. Gia offered patients personalized support to answer medical questions and engage them in conversations about their risk of hereditary cancer.

This study also showed that Invitae Gia provided professionals with a simplified process for collecting and analyzing patient data to identify high-risk individuals more quickly before routine care appointments.

AI chatbots also reduced the administrative burden on healthcare professionals, allowing them more opportunities to focus on individual patient care.

Integrating AI chatbots into hereditary cancer risk assessment and genetic testing has the potential to transform healthcare by expanding access, improving efficiency, and providing tools for patients.
