The main factors that influence a person&#039;s risk include being female and getting older. Most breast cancers are detected in women aged 50 and older.<\/p>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Some women develop breast cancer even though they have no other known risk factors. Having a risk factor does not mean a person will develop the disease, and not all risk factors have the same effect. Most women have some risk factors, but most women do not develop breast cancer. Women with dense breasts are more likely to develop breast cancer.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>Personal history of breast cancer or certain non-cancerous breast conditions.<\/strong> Women who have had breast cancer are more likely to develop it a second time. Having a male first-degree relative with breast cancer also increases a woman&#039;s risk.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>Previous radiotherapy treatments.<\/strong> Women who have received radiation therapy to the chest or breasts before the age of 30 (for example, for the treatment of Hodgkin lymphoma) have a higher risk of developing breast cancer later in life.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\"><strong>Exposure to the drug diethylstilbestrol.<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/espanol\/cancer\/causas-prevencion\/riesgo\/hormonas\/hoja-informativa-des\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Diethylstilbestrol<\/span><\/a> It was administered to some pregnant women in the United States between 1940 and 1971 to prevent miscarriage.
