The treatments\u00a0<em>tumor-agnostics<\/em>\u00a0They target genetic alterations shared by tumors in different organs, opening new therapeutic options for patients who previously had none. In this post, we explain in clear language what this approach means, what the key biomarkers are, and when a test is indicated.\u00a0<strong>NGS<\/strong>\u00a0It can be a determining factor in clinical practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>(And why more and more doctors are requesting genomic studies like NGS)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For many years, cancer was classified and treated primarily according to the part of the body where it appeared: breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, etc. Each diagnosis followed very different paths, even when some tumors shared very similar biological characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in recent years something changed forever:&nbsp;<em>We are beginning to understand that cancer is not defined solely by the organ where it starts, but by the genetic alterations that drive it.<\/em>.<br>This is where a new concept emerges that is transforming medicine: the&nbsp;<strong>tumor-agnostic cancer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does \u201ctumor agnostic\u201d really mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tumor-agnostic cancer is one that&nbsp;<strong>It is not classified by location.<\/strong>, but by a specific molecular alteration that can be found in different types of tumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that&nbsp;<strong>Two patients with cancer in completely different organs can receive the same treatment<\/strong>, provided they share the same mutation or biomarker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples of these alterations include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>MSI-H<\/strong>\u00a0(high microsatellite instability)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High TMB<\/strong>\u00a0(high mutational burden)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mergers in\u00a0<strong>NTRK<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mutation\u00a0<strong>BRAF V600E<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alterations in\u00a0<strong>RET<\/strong>\u00a0o\u00a0<strong>KRAS G12C<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a tumor exhibits one of these signs, it may respond to&nbsp;<strong>targeted therapies<\/strong>&nbsp;regardless of where it started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why is this new way of classifying cancer so important?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because for the first time, we can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. To classify cancer with much greater accuracy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We no longer just see&nbsp;<em>which organ is affected<\/em>, but&nbsp;<strong>What is driving the tumor at a genetic level?<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Offer more personalized treatments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Targeted therapies can be more effective and cause fewer adverse effects when the treatment is tailored to the exact mutation of the tumor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> 3. Identify options even when the tumor is rare or difficult to classify<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For patients with metastatic cancer or cancer of uncertain primary origin, genomic studies can reveal options that previously seemed nonexistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.
